Viewpoint: Unleash Worcester's potential through smarter taxation

Keith’s opinion piece for Worcester Business Journal describes the benefits of Land-Value Tax (LVT for short) as a means of addressing longstanding issues in Worcester.

LVT could ease Worcester’s housing affordability crisis. By encouraging denser development in areas with existing infrastructure, we could increase housing supply and lower long-term costs. Unlike taxes on buildings, taxing land doesn’t discourage productive behavior. It’s a fairer system, too: it captures for public benefit a portion of the value created by the community investment that our tax dollars fund—schools, parks, roads, and safety.

City council candidate Keith Linhares wants to change the way Worcester residents are able to get information about roadwork, service requests, and city infrastructure projects. 

At the May 13 city council meeting, he filed a petition calling for a searchable, public-facing digital database of all Department of Public Works (DPW) projects—past, present, and future.
